Who writes my Certificate of Fitness, and how often?

Accepted Answer

The first one has to come from a medical practitioner, so your first appointment with us is with one of our doctors. After that a certificate can be written by your treating physiotherapist or psychologist, which is useful because those are the clinicians you are actually seeing week to week. A single certificate cannot run past 28 days, so they come round often, and it is the gap between one and the next that puts weekly payments at risk. Question 2

How does my physio or psychology treatment get approved?

Accepted Answer

Your treating clinician sends the insurer a request setting out what treatment you need and why it is reasonable and necessary for the injuries from the crash. The insurer has to come back as quickly as it can and, at the outside, within 10 days of the request landing. If the answer is no, the insurer must give reasons, hand over the material it relied on, and tell you how to have the decision reviewed. What does the appointment cost me?

Accepted Answer

Once a claim is accepted the CTP insurer picks up your treatment, not you. Before a claim is accepted there is a short pre-claim window in which an insurer can agree to pay for a general practitioner consultation and two allied health sessions, inside 28 days of the crash. That agreement is the insurer’s call, and it needs to have been told about the accident, with a claim or reference number issued. We check the approval before we book you in, so the money side is settled before you walk through the door. If the insurer declines liability or declines a treatment request, the accounts fall back to you, which is exactly why we sort the approvals out first. Question 4

I crashed while I was working. Is that a CTP claim or a WorkCover claim?

Accepted Answer

It can be both, and the two schemes run on different rules, different forms and different deadlines. A crash during a delivery run, a rideshare shift or a drive between jobs can sit in workers compensation, in CTP, or across both. Getting that wrong at the start costs weeks. We run treatment under both schemes every day, so we work out which claim covers what before the paperwork starts rather than after.

Question 5

The crash was my fault. Can I still be treated?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Treatment and care and weekly payments are available whether or not you caused the crash. If you were wholly or mostly at fault, they run for up to 52 weeks. That is a real entitlement, not a technicality, and it is the single thing people most often talk themselves out of.
